Clearing a drain that keeps blocking only buys time. If it has gone more than once or twice in a year, something in the pipe is holding material up, and until that is found, it will keep happening.
The single biggest cause of blocked drains in UK homes. It goes down the sink warm and liquid, then cools, sets against the pipe wall and narrows the bore until everything else catches on it.
It builds up gradually, which is why the blockages get closer together over time.
Wipes do not break down the way toilet paper does, whatever the packet says. They snag on a joint or a rough section and everything after them piles up behind.
This is one of the most common things we pull out of a manhole.
Roots find their way into a pipe through a hairline crack or a slightly open joint, then keep growing inside it because there is water there. A rodded clear-out cuts them back; it does not stop them returning.
Recurring blockages at the same point, especially near a tree or hedge, are worth putting a camera down.
Ground movement, a badly bedded repair or age can leave a pipe cracked, offset at a joint, or with a section that has lost its fall so water no longer runs away properly. Anything solid then settles in that dip.
This is a structural fault. No amount of clearing fixes it, it needs repairing or relining.
More than once or twice a year at the same spot suggests a physical cause rather than bad luck, and is worth investigating properly.
It can shift a light build-up, but it will not cut roots or repair a cracked pipe, and repeated use is not kind to older pipework.
