It depends where the blockage is. Since October 2011, most shared and lateral drains that connect to the public sewer are the water company's responsibility (United Utilities, across the North West), common in the Victorian and Edwardian terraces across the region, where drains often run shared under the back alley. The drain inside your own boundary is still yours. If you're not sure which one you've got, that's exactly what a call-out sorts out.
Fat, oil and grease poured down the sink is the single biggest cause of blocked drains in UK homes. Wet wipes, hair, sanitary items and tree roots account for most of the rest. None of it looks like a problem going down, it just doesn't come back up easily.
Burst pipes, active flooding, sewage backing up into the house, no water or heating, or a smell of gas, call straight away. A slow drip, low pressure, or a drain that's slow but still draining can usually wait for a scheduled visit, and costs less to fix that way too.
If a drain keeps blocking, more than once or twice a year, clearing it again only buys time. A camera down the line finds the actual cause: root ingress, a cracked or displaced pipe, or a section that's lost its fall. Worth doing before an extension or driveway goes in near an existing drain too, and before buying a house with older drainage.

Very helpful and fast service when I had pipe leaking through my ceiling that required urgent attention. Mia was friendly and helpful on the phone and asked the right questions to assess the problem, and Liam was excellent when… he arrived - courteous, professional and quick to explain what he needed to do, before fixing the leaking pipe.
